Artist Statement |  Lior Zelering

My bond with the art world started at age 13. The technique was a board with four wheels. There, on the urban battlefield where I left a few broken teeth, legs, and hands, I learned valuable life lessons that only hitting the concrete could teach me. I was also exposed to street art and the do-it-yourself philosophy through skateboarding, where there were no rules or cliques.

I was born in Venezuela and grew up in Israel. After a few years of intensive work as a founder of several ventures and as a freelance developer, designer, and advertising manager, I moved to Nova Scotia, Canada. Nowadays, I work as a freelance graphic and UX designer and digital project manager during the day, and I create art at night.

As an artist of the pop genre, my work is invigorated by homages to my childhood heroes, superheroes, memes, popular culture, current events, podcasts, social aggression, the digital world, and influences from pop culture, movies, punk bands, and Jazz music. My art reflects the current social mindset, providing a critical perspective on all sides of politics and human interest. I ridicule woke culture and the far right, as well as various social and political trends, often employing cynicism and humor.

I admire and respect the history of art and design and the people who helped propel it. One art movement I hold in high regard is Dada. Even though it was short-lived, it combined rebellious philosophy, political satire, design, and art in extraordinary ways, influencing many artists, including myself, even today.

I do most of my work digitally and utilize various mixed techniques I have developed. I particularly enjoy combining analog and digital elements. My work features contrasts, organic shapes, abstract forms, typography, collages, and layers of grungy textures and patterns.
